Located in the Andalusian city of Cordoba in Spain this cathedral is thought of as perhaps the most accomplished monument of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba. The Caliphate of Cordoba ruled the Iberian peninsula and North Africa from the city of Cordoba from 929 to 1031. The building was begun in approximately 600AD and after the Islamic conquest the Emir Abd ar-Rahman I bought the church. Abd ar-Rahman I and his descendants reworked it over two centuries to refashion it as a mosque, starting in 784. Today the entire building is used to house the Cathedral of the diocese of Cordoba in Spain.</p>
